Salem Central School District’s first Tech7 Computer Fair was a great success. Parents were able to see student computer projects that earned them nationally recognized technology literacy awards. Salem Central School District is taking part in a grant funded program called Tech Yes. Tech Yes provided the school with resource materials, a website that the students used to work on their projects to keep track of their success, and the technology literacy certificates. After completing two projects that demonstrated the ability to use technology to find, organize, create and share, students earned national recognition of their technology literacy. Mr. De Soto is the tech yes advisor and 7th grade technology teacher that organized the computer fair. “It was amazing to see the expressions on the parent’s faces when they saw what their child was able to create” explained Mr. De Soto. Student projects varied from presentations and slideshows to movies and websites. “I did not know that she could make a website” said one student’s mother. Shelly Dean, a school board member that attended the fair, was impressed with the student’s projects and said that she wanted the students to show her how to do some of the computer skills that went into the projects that she saw. Mr. De Soto said “21st century skills are in demand and Salem Central School District students are ready for the challenge that they will face in the future by completing this program. I am already looking forward to next year’s Tech Yes success stories”. Congratulations to all of the seventh grade technology students that earned this certification.

Starting in Spring of the 2010, three surrounding districts will participate in the NYSSTL Expansion Grant. The expansion of this grant is very important because piloting new schools will help continue the improvement of sustainable, customizable and affordable tools and resources for the model. These goals are within the original NYSSTL grant and has become even more important given the economic conditions many schools face. Ithaca City Schools, Webster Public Schools and the Brooklyn Achievement Schools will be piloting the first of this expansion model that includes the NYSSTL toolkit. This Toolkit will include powerful resources to help each district develop their own STL clubs and replicate the NYSSTL model without formal training from Generation YES and HFM BOCES. These three pioneer districts will provide feedback to make the Toolkit a significant component towards expanding the model in the state of New York.

The first Student Tech Leaders of the NYSSTL program got the year off to a great start in two summer camp sessions in July. Students going into the seventh grade at each NYSSTL middle school were chosen to work with Generation YES and BOCES staff to learn about the NYSSTL program and get ready to recruit more students to the club in the fall.

The STLs learned movie-making, web design, and other technology skills, found out how the GenYES and TechYES programs work, and practiced being mentors and leaders in NYSSTL. Everyone had a great time working together to create GenYES and TechYES projects. All the students successfully completed their TechYES certification and did a wonderful job mentoring and evaluating one another. Great work, STLs!
